Overview of NIMHANS in Bangalore
NIMHANS is the apex centre for mental health and neuroscience education in the country. It is an Institute of National Importance operating autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. NIMHANS is ranked 4th best medical institute in India, in the current National Institutional Ranking Framework.
The history of the institute dates back to 1847, when the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum was founded. In 1925, the Government of Mysore renamed the asylum as the Mental Hospital. The Mysore Government Mental Hospital became the first institute in India for postgraduate training in psychiatry.
The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) was the result of the amalgamation of the erstwhile State Mental Hospital and the All India Institute of Mental Health (AIIMH) established by the Government of India in 1954. The institute was inaugurated on 27 December 1974, establishing it as an autonomous body under the Societies Registration Act to lead in the area of medical service and research in the country.
On 14 November 1994, NIMHANS was conferred a deemed university status by the University Grants Commission with academic autonomy. NIMHANS has five campuses in the city, spread over an area of 174 acres of urban establishments, which includes 30 acres of an under-construction Bangalore North campus. With 1500 + beds Capacity.

- The Biomedical Engineering section of NIMHANS is responsible for testing, repairing, and maintaining in proper and safe operating condition, Institute’s diagnostic and therapeutic equipments.
- We provide technology management and equipment planning support, and medical equipment maintenance of institute’s facilities. Our efforts are directed to biomedical and radiographic devices and systems used in a variety of patient care and care-support services.

- Integrated Brachytherapy Unit with Remote Controlled HDR: Brachytherapy involves placing a radioactive source directly inside or very close to the tumor. High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a form of this treatment where a controlled radioactive source is delivered remotely.

- Foreign Nationals having a valid Medical Visa (M Visa) only can be admitted to the hospital. Attendants of such patients should be in possession of a valid Medical Attendant Visa (MX Visa).
- Patients /attendants who possess any other type of Visa, other than M Visa and MX Visa respectively cannot be admitted. However, such patients will be given outpatient consultation and treatment.
- In the event of a foreign National, arriving in Emergency condition, and not possessing M Visa he/she should be
- instituted life saving treatment and subsequently RMO/MS should be informed before admitting that patient.
- Foreign patients who have come on “M Visa” and “MX Visa” for medical treatment have to mandatorily register themselves with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) Bangalore, within 14 days of arrival.
