Introduction
What is TOF in Pediatric Cardiology
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a rare heart condition that babies are born with. It affects how blood flows through the heart and to the rest of the body. TOF is one of the most common congenital (present at birth) heart defects, and it needs special care from pediatric heart doctors.
TOF Full Form
The full form of TOF is Tetralogy of Fallot. It is called a "tetralogy" because it includes four related heart problems:
1. A hole between the lower chambers of the heart (Ventricular Septal Defect - VSD)
2. A narrowing in the lung artery (Pulmonary Stenosis)
3. The aorta (main artery) is shifted to the wrong place (Overriding Aorta)
4. Thickening of the right heart chamber (Right Ventricular Hypertrophy)
TOF Meaning in Simple Terms
In simple words, TOF means the heart can't send enough oxygen-rich blood to the body. This can cause the baby’s skin, lips, or nails to look blue, especially when crying or feeding.
TOF Types
There are different types or variations of TOF depending on how severe the defects are:
Mild TOF – Less narrowing of the lung artery
Severe TOF – Very little or no blood reaching the lungs
TOF with Pulmonary Atresia – Complete blockage of the pulmonary valve
TOF with Absent Pulmonary Valve – Valve is missing or poorly developed
These types help doctors plan the right treatment and decide the timing of TOF surgery.
